Laying the Groundwork

Almost twelve years ago, I sat in a Bradley U speech class and heard the most amazing tale. This guy told the story of a trip he had taken just weeks before the first day of orientation. He drove Route 66 with his best friend. They went from beginning to end--Chicago to Santa Monica, CA. He weaved a magical story of friendship, America and the freedom of the open road. This was a trip to be taken with your best friend. And since October of 1997, Kate and I have dreamed of The Cruise of the Mother Road.

On July 18, our dream will become a reality. Clark the Car joined the family last fall. He's a handsome Honda Civic with a nice warranty and excellent gas mileage. Clark (named after the cross street of Wrigley Field--yes, I still believe.) was up to the challenge. And so, here we go.

We will be updating this traveling diary as often as wifi allows. I hope to include short stories, points of interest, playlists and maybe even some tall tales. Please feel free to "join" us along the way.

  1. Excellent idea, Goebel Girls! I will be following your journey and developments as you 'get your kicks'. May I suggest stopping in Oklahoma City in the Bricktown neighborhood. I stayed their when doing the library installation for OKC schools. Hit the riverwalk and the ballpark while you are there. Enjoy yourselves!

  6. Thanks for inviting me along :o) Clark will need to meet Blue Bunny (my Honda C-RV someday). I just got back from part of the Route 66 experience. Funny that it was just a few days ago that I said it would be quite a trip to go all of Route 66 and here you both are living the dream! Are you marking spots, picking up rocks, weird souveniors, your oh so interesting pics, or what to remember each stop along the way?
